Here are the basic rules on how to play chess. The most important piece that you have on the chessboard is the king. After that, there are a number of other pieces on the board, including the queen, the rook, the bishop, the knight and the pawn. Each piece is given a certain value. The objective of the game is to capture the king. Once that is done, you have won the game. Here is how each of the pieces move:
King - one space in any direction
Queen - unlimited spaces in any direction
Rook - unlimited spaces in all directions except diagonal
Bishop - unlimited spaces diagonally on their same color
Knight - an L shape (2 spaces ahead one across, or 1 space ahead and 2 across)
Pawn - 1 or 2 spaces at the beginning, thereafter one ahead. It captures diagonally. If the pawn reaches the far end of the board it can become any piece. Players usually opt for the queen.
